BYD, a leader in new energy vehicles (NEVs) and power batteries, has embarked on a revolutionary chapter in maritime transportation with the debut of its first dedicated roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) carrier, EXPLORER NO.1. The vessel, officially delivered on January 10th, sets sail on its maiden journey, signifying a significant advancement in BYD’s international logistics capabilities amid limited global ro-ro shipping resources.
The BYD-branded EXPLORER NO.1, measuring 199.9 meters, showcases BYD’s commitment to sustainable shipping through innovative green and intelligent shipbuilding technologies. With an impressive loading capacity of 7,000 vehicles, the vessel features a pioneering dual-fuel LNG (liquefied natural gas) and conventional fuel propulsion system. Over the next two years, seven additional vessels, incorporating BYD’s energy storage battery tech and shaft generator systems, are set to join the fleet, embodying BYD’s vision for a more environmentally friendly era in maritime transportation.
The successful launch of EXPLORER NO.1 marks a significant stride for BYD in expanding its presence in overseas markets. Demonstrating a collaborative approach, the company not only plans to deploy these ro-ro ships for its own operations but also seeks open partnerships, ushering in a new era for BYD on the international stage.
Leveraging its leadership in the NEV sector, BYD achieved a remarkable feat in 2023 by exporting 242,765 NEVs, experiencing a staggering year-on-year growth of 334.2%. The total annual NEV sales surpassed 3.02 million units, solidifying BYD’s position as the world’s leading seller of new energy vehicles. With a new energy footprint spanning six continents, BYD engages over 70 countries and regions, reaching more than 400 cities globally, underlining its profound impact in promoting green mobility solutions worldwide.
