va-Q-tec introduces ‘Thermal Coat’ to enhance temperature control in pharmaceutical air and sea freight

va-Q-tec, the leading provider of highly efficient tech products and solutions for thermal insulation and Temperature Controlled (TempChain) logistics, has introduced an innovative solution for transporting temperature-sensitive goods in pharmaceutical air and sea freight. Dr. Ravi Prakash Mathur (Vice President – Supply Chain, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories) inaugurated and unveiled the new ‘Thermal Coat’, featuring va-Q-gel technology. The product addresses the challenges of temperature-controlled transportation by directly and efficiently coating temperature-sensitive items.

The va-Q-gel utilizes a gelled phase change material (PCM), ensuring exceptional leak resistance. It can be pre-conditioned for specific temperature ranges (+2 °C to +8 °C or +15 °C to +25 °C) without requiring additional external energy supply.

With a reliable performance of up to 24 hours, the Thermal Coat surpasses conventional solutions, enhancing autonomous performance and buffer times during transportation for increased safety. This advanced technology finds application in air and sea freight, particularly benefiting the transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, generics, vaccines, and biopharmaceutical products.

In air freight, the va-Q-tec solution markedly enhances the effectiveness of traditional Thermal Covers, offering a qualified buffer time of 7 hours for extreme ambient temperatures and direct sunlight on the tarmac. The gelled form of the phase-change material eliminates the need for liquid substances, making it lightweight and leak-proof.

In temperature-controlled sea freight containers (reefers), the Thermal Coat ensures a qualified temperature integrity of 24 hours, even in the absence of an active cooling unit or during loading/unloading when there’s a lack of energy supply from the reefer. This minimizes the risk of temperature variations and potential damage to sensitive goods. In case of a power failure, the solution triples the autonomous temperature integrity of sea freight reefers.

Designed to facilitate faster loading (up to 50% quicker) and efficient space utilization (saving 30% per pallet) in sea and air freight, the Thermal Coat offers flexibility with adjustable height and enhanced stability through clipping technology. The PCM is strapped directly around the goods. Currently available for +5 °C and +20 °C transports, the Thermal Coat presents a cutting-edge solution for the evolving demands of temperature-sensitive cargo transportation.

Our partners receive a qualified solution that not only triples the time buffer in the 2 events of power failures in sea freight reefers but also significantly increases product safety for long transport routes on the ship,” explains Fabian Eschenbach, Global Head of TempChain at va-Q-tec.

The Thermal Coat is being presented for the first time at Air Cargo India from 14 to 16 February.
