Nestlé, the global giant in food and beverages, gave a well-received surprise as it announced its commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 80% in the ocean logistics arena. As a means to the end, the FMCG colossus has partnered with Maersk and will utilize the latter’s ECO Delivery solution for 100% of its ocean containers shipped in 2023, with an option to extend this eco-friendly initiative into 2024 and beyond.
ECO Delivery allows Maersk customers to manage ocean transports entirely with certified green fuels, such as second-generation biofuel derived from waste feedstocks. This marks a pivotal shift, replacing traditional fossil fuels and significantly reducing seaborne emissions. With the Maersk tool, customers receive confirmation of GHG emission savings through a certificate, ensuring transparency and accountability in the pursuit of sustainability.
Reaching net zero requires changing many aspects of how we source, make, and distribute our products. The agreements we’ve signed with Maersk will help reduce emissions and deliver immediate positive impacts on our carbon footprint.
Stephanie Hart, Global Head of Operations at Nestlé
Aligning with Nestlé’s ambitious environmental goals, the initiative aims for a 50% reduction in total emissions by 2030, ultimately reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. ECO Delivery proves especially effective in addressing scope 3 emissions linked to ocean transports.
Initially pioneered by Nestlé’s water beverages and Nespresso in 2021, ECO Delivery now extends its positive impact to many more of Nestlé’s 2,000 brands, reaching end consumers with a significantly reduced GHG footprint. Beyond ocean transports, Nestlé collaborates with Maersk in piloting low GHG emission landside transports, incorporating rail and electric trucks into their green logistics portfolio.
This is a very decisive step of Nestlé to use our very low GHG emission solution for 100% of their ocean cargo with Maersk. We are proud and delighted to make this immense emission savings possible with our ECO Delivery. Having green fuel solutions like ECO Delivery at hand, it still takes such impressive commitments of our customers like Nestlé to make the decarbonization of our shipping and landside logistics actually happen. This is why we are grateful for the positive feedback we get from customers like Nestlé that are buying ECO Delivery for all their ocean cargo. This makes a real change for the climate and for our world.
Johan Sigsgaard, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer Ocean of A.P. Moller – Maersk
ECO Delivery attracts major players, signaling a substantial financial commitment from cargo owners. The initiative guarantees direct emission savings, exemption from future EU Emissions Trading System charges, and fixed prices for green fuels. The success of ECO Delivery prompts plans for availability in airfreight cargo and certain landside transports, further amplifying its environmental impact.
